I often re-read books, actually. That is the mark of writers I truly enjoy. Of all the authors named, only Orwell is one I re-read, and I try to read Animal Farm or 1984 roughly once a year. They were prescient the first time around, and just get fatter and fatter as the years pass. As writers go, I suppose Orwell's pretty good company, but he's certainly a small part of my reading list.

I took in a smattering of Poe(try) along the way, and there is actually a collection of Poe's work somewhere in my boxes of books. I read Doyle as a kid, of course, and Brown more recently. I wouldn't re-read Brown and haven't felt any inspiration to re-read Doyle, although I just might if the world would calm down a bit.

Interestingly, Richard Mitchell's Underground Grammarian text a few posts down produced this same outcome, as did (with consistency) a few pieces penned by Jeff Cooper that I fed into the beastie. I've only heard the name - never read a thing Lovecraft wrote. It's intriguing that Mitchell, Cooper and I would test the same, since in both topic and style they rank among my favorite writers. This is getting interesting. So, I copied parts of letters I wrote 30 years ago, which consistently brought up Lovecraft's name as well.

That was long before any of Mitchell's works (and most of Cooper's, including all of his books) were published. If asked before today, I would have guessed that my own style might have been influenced by them. It now appears that just the opposite is true: Our style is our own, if we're genuine, and we're simply most attracted to the writers who think and express themselves the same way we do, regardless of the topic.

Makes sense!

Mitchell, Cooper, Fireplaceguy and now Lovecraft. That's another author I need to read, and he's now high on my used bookstore shopping list to infinity and beyond, at least until I satisfy my curiosity.

Running my words through this wringer was an interesting exercise. You never know what you'll find! Try it, a few times, for yourself, along with the words of a couple of your favorite authors...

Getting an Early Start

So, yeah, I cracked open a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat just now, which of course set me to thinking of this:

In my present mood I'd have been far less polite.

My Hiatus Ends...

The last few months have been consumed with my mother's death, my own relocation to an idyllic rural retreat and a new business endeavor. Work on the retreat continues and I'm not quite ready for winter yet, but life out here is good - VERY good!

I haven't been in any hurry to re-establish internet service, and it's interesting that I really haven't missed much in the way of news. (No matter how far away you move, you just can't escape reality!) Communication with friends, on the other hand, has been rather poor. Sorry! I hope this finds everyone as well off as our nation's predicament allows. I look forward to posting now and then and to getting back in regular touch with everyone.

Why I'm a Gun Owner

Here's one popular line of thinking:

Such attitudes are the mark of tyrants. Here's another way of thinking, which maturity and wisdom prefers:

The Bill of Rights is a moral statement. It protects unalienable human rights that by definition predate, supersede and outlive any system of government instituted by man. This is the meaning of Liberty!

Redistribution of Wealth is Bad Enough...

...but this redistribution of guilt is even worse!

Did you buy too much house? Did your mortgage adjust? Real estate/mortgage/appraisal/construction "career" in the tank? Sorry, but t's not my fault. It's yours. Bubbles are not wealth, and I'm not supporting you!

No amount of guilt misdirected my way will change my mind, either.

Being right ain't necessarily a source of joy...

...and if you think I like watching this mess unfold you're sadly mistaken.

All this because I'm on record as pessimistic about the economy since 9/11, and on record predicting the collapse of real estate in 2002. (Premature prognostication!) Taking this in, a friend just accused me of actually reveling in this mess of ours - which is absolutely not the case. Alarmed? Yes. Enjoying myself? Not in the least.

I'd much prefer to be engaged in pursuits of my own choosing, but the damage done daily by government (not to mention the damage proposed) compels the attention of any thinking person - almost to the exclusion of everyday life. To have our nation deliberately harmed, our remaining Liberty stolen - not gradually but boldly, deliberately, rapidly...

(Just how do we describe the folks who can ignore current events? What of those who welcome them? Now there's a topic!)

As I said, almost to the exclusion of everyday life. Almost, but not quite! Just step back and learn from this - it should be obvious by now that placing any meaningful faith in man is a seriously flawed approach to life. Put your faith in God and you'll find real peace - even in this troubled earthly existence.

While times are certainly tough, you can enjoy yourself fully despite the circumstances. We're incredibly, richly blessed in America, and our blessings can be counted daily - even hourly, regardless of what our corrupt politicians are doing at the moment.

Our blessings abound. If you need to, make a list! Then, give thanks...

A Target-Rich Environment

Just yesterday I told a blogger friend that I thought a blog would be an insatiable beast - that posting regularly would become a real chore. After all, this writing stuff is work and I paid scant attention to sentence structure back in the day...

Was I ever wrong!

After we hung up, I reflected on several things we'd discussed. I've been saying for years that "it's later than we think" and I no longer wish to stand on the sidelines. In the ensuing 24 hours I've undergone a transformation - from thinking and talking to publicly posting. Not on someone else's forum in response to others, but on my own page.

My thoughts. My responsibility. (My grammar!) Me.

I'm finding that the problem is not my imagined lack of subject matter. It's quite the opposite. Each day's news provides several pressing topics, and my perspective on history, humanity, humor, Liberty and God suggests many many more. I read widely, which provides more grist for the mill. Heck, I'm a day into this and I've already jotted down three pages of ideas for future posts - many of which, in light of current events, I may never get to...

Likewise, it's already dawned on me that I need to set a daily time limit - after which "buzzer" sounds, I'd best shut this laptop beastie down and get on with living. Living. Yeah - that and preparing for the clouds descending on our country...

Sure, this writing stuff is work, but I'm really enjoying myself. Who'da thunk?
